Extreme sea levels at Rapa Nui (Easter Island) during intense atmospheric rivers

چکیده

In addition to the tsunami hazard posed by distant great earthquakes, Rapa Nui (Easter Island), in Southeast Pacific Ocean, is exposed frequent and intense coastal storms. Here, we use sea-level records field surveys guided video photographic footage show that extreme sea levels at occur much more than previously thought thus constitute an unrecognized inland’s maritime supply chain. We found events, including two most (March 5th May 5th, 2020) our 17-month-long analyzed period (from January 1st, 2019, 31st, 2020), resulted from constructive superpositions of seiches on shelf, storm surges high tides. By further analyzing time series atmospheric wind-generated wave data, conclude these are ultimately driven breaking large waves near coastline (i.e., setup), with lesser contribution barometric setup even less wind setup. also propose were mainly generated strong, long-lasting, NW winds associated rivers (long, narrow regions atmosphere transport abundant water vapor) passing over Nui. Given intensity level increase as climate changes, a deeper understanding relation between meteorological oceanographic processes strongly needed.

Revisiting Rapa Nui ( Easter Island ) ‘ ‘ Ecocide ’ ’ 1 Terry

Easter Island (Rapa Nui) has become widely known as a case of ‘‘ecocide,’’ where the ancient Polynesians recklessly destroyed their environment and, as a consequence, suffered collapse. In recent publications, both popular and academic, scholars have promoted this perspective, drawing upon archaeological evidence and offering Rapa Nui as a parable for our current global crisis. In this paper we...

The terrestrial Isopoda (Crustacea, Oniscidea) of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), with descriptions of two new species

Nine species of terrestrial isopods are reported for the Polynesian island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) based upon museum materials and recent collections from field sampling. Most of these animals are non-native species, but two are new to science: Styloniscusmanuvaka sp. n. and Hawaiiosciarapui sp. n. Of these, the former is believed to be a Polynesian endemic as it has been recorded from Rapa...

Diet of the prehistoric population of Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile) shows environmental adaptation and resilience

OBJECTIVES The Rapa Nui "ecocide" narrative questions whether the prehistoric population caused an avoidable ecological disaster through rapid deforestation and over-exploitation of natural resources. The objective of this study was to characterize prehistoric human diets to shed light on human adaptability and land use in an island environment with limited resources. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ma...

Genetic Evidence for a Contribution of Native Americans to the Early Settlement of Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

Available evidence strongly suggests that the first to settle on Rapa Nui were Polynesians arriving from the west around AD 1200–1253. There are, however, also signs of an early contact between Rapa Nui and South America, but genetic evidence of an early contribution of Native Americans to the peopling of Rapa Nui has until recently been lacking. In this review our own genetic studies of blood-...
